Keeping traces of its industrial past to reinvest a site with a new purpose

Architecture

London, UK

Area: 51300m2

This urban project redefines a polluted yet highly iconic East London industrial site by creating new “soils” at different vertical levels. Hosting residential buildings along the river, the ground is an urban agricultural park containing communal and floodable gardens built on the industrial traces.

On their lower levels, the buildings align themselves with the urban fabric, creating a seamless relationship with their surroundings offering new public spaces. Above, the fanning gardens of the upper floors maintain the memorial presence of the gasholders, twisting their form to produce a new local iconic landscape; the ascending elevated gardens.

The proposal is set along the canal and traces of its industrial past.

Set on the former industrial site the project creates a public park encouraging urban agriculture and vertical gardens, in a well-balanced relationship between private and public amenities.

The massing is reminiscent of the gas holder structures.
